Hello folks, this is VolcanFPS, the Legionfarm PRO Apex Legends player and a coach. Today we’re going to explore another member of TSM, Dalton "Daltoosh" Hester. He is the streamer and content creator for TSM’s organization. He is well known in the Apex Legends community and pro scene.

A lot of us look up to these media personalities. We watch their streams, join their watch parties whenever there’s a competition, and enjoy their company, even if it’s virtual. But how did this guy come around to being one of the faces of the game? In this article, I would like to explore Daltoosh’s in-game settings and his energetic personality.

The Story of Dalton "Daltoosh" Hester

Dalton Hester was born in Florida, USA, on February 8, 1996. He has two sisters - Alicia and Ashley, whom he loves very much. Dalton doesn’t have a significant other as, according to him, he isn’t interested in having a romantic relationship at this point in his life. He currently lives in Austin, Texas, and is a PRO player and a signed content creator and caster at TSM. His love of video games goes all the way back to Dalton’s childhood. According to one of the interviews, his top-5 favorite games are:

  • Spyro on PS 1
  • Odd World Strangers Wrath on XBOX
  • Halo 2 and 3 on XBOX360
  • Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 (2009)
  • Apex Legends (2019)

Dalton is really passionate about the things he loves, which is evident from his favorite games. He really loved that adventure game Spyro which wasn’t the easiest of all available games. But once young Dalton tried Odd World, he got immediately hooked on FPS games. Yes, that particular game wasn’t your average FPS, but still, it served an important role in how dedicated Dalton gets when he wants to achieve something. The next games, Halo 2 and 3, were those games that made competitive multiplayer modes into something accessible and enjoyable. And even though he was 14 at the time and his mother, Mindy, was worried about Dalton being bullied online, he convinced her to buy him XBOX360 so he could play the new game in the living room.

Dalton says that he was all over that game, and about a year after playing it, he got into competitive ranked playlists, Lone Wolves specifically, which is where he got to rank 50. That’s where Daltoosh’s skills and achievements start to show. That playlist would have you play solo against other 5 or 7 really skilled players, and the way rank points worked back then was that you had to win about six times in a row to get 1 point. But as soon as you lose one game that you finish being 4th, you lose that 1 point!

For Daltoosh, Halo changed from being a fun game for a couple of hours to something that he would wake up and start playing without brushing his teeth or eating. Halo took all of Dalton’s focus and dedication which shows us what kind of gamer Daltoosh is.

The second game where Dalton demonstrated his incredible ability to commit to results was CoD Modern Warfare 2. Dalthoosh gained 10th Prestige 70 without boosting just by playing pubs. When Dalton went to high school, he met friends who were also enjoying MW 2. That’s when they grouped together and started attending Gamebattles Live tournaments with 4v4 map playlists with rules, etc. At the same time, Dalton would host LAN parties at his house, where he and his friends would gather and play CoD together. All of this led to Daltoosh being ranked number 16 in the SOLOs of Gamebattles. This is the kind of ranking for the 1v1 “Search and Destroy” playlist. As Daltoosh admits, he was sweating on MW 2 hard. So hard, in fact, that Dalton became very toxic towards his friends at some point. This is a side effect of playing pubs competitively. Anyway, it had gotten to a point where Dalton decided that he needed to take a break from gaming, and to signify this change, he broke his XBOX360 apart. Two months later, Dalton got another XBOX.

Finally, Apex Legends was a game that turned Daltoosh’s life upside down. He played this game since day one and loved it so much that Dalton would not study when he had an exam in Colledge. About two or three weeks after the game’s launch, a website called apex.tracker.gg released the leaderboards. Dalton decided to check out where he landed after playing the game leisurely. Turns out he landed at top-60 overall, without even grinding kills. Daltoosh realized that he had a knack for this game, so he started grinding kills to continue to climb the leaderboard. Why did he decide to go further? Because Dalton Hester is a competitive kind of person. Dalton was streaming his grind. However, nobody was really noticing his talent as his total viewership at the time was around 5 people. But once he got into the top 10 overall and top-1 in the world as Lifeline on PS 4, he started to slowly gain recognition as his following on streams rose to 30 and then 60.

At that point, Dalton noticed that his advancement in the game and as a streamer brought some type of results. So, he called his mom and told her that he would like to focus on gaming and streaming. After that, Dalton continued to grind every day. He’d play 75% of the day and sleep for very few hours. As he admits, it was a constant race to maintain that top-1 position for a couple of months. And the only thing that helped Daltoosh to maintain such a position was his competitive drive which never faded away.

Dalton’s view on why he is perceived as a good player is intriguing. Basically, he compares video games to sports in the sense that some athletes have a natural talent while others have to grind their way up to where they are in terms of talent. Dalton has both talents, and he plays a lot. So, essentially, even if you have a natural talent, you still have to put in the time to be better than what just your natural talent gives you.

Daltoosh And His Console Heritage

Daltoosh is a controller player, as he has been using gamepads to play games since a young age. Besides, Dalton says that his PC setup doesn’t have much space to have a keyboard and mouse. For those of you who were wondering, Daltoosh doesn’t play claw, which is a very specific way to hold your controller.

However, Daltoosh does use one extra paddle on his gamepad. The reason he is using only one and not all four is that it makes him uncomfortable with all of them. He tried it on stream in the past, and it only resulted in aimless button mashing. He is using the Scuf Gaming controller with detachable paddles.

Daltoosh Apex Settings

In one of the interviews, Daltoosh said that he doesn’t use any extremely custom settings. As such, he doesn’t use Custom Look Controls, which has become quite popular among professional controller players. His Look and ADS sensitivity are 5 and 4, respectively, with Standard Response Curve. His FOV is 110, which is the maximum available value. So, according to Daltoosh, it’s just a combination of mostly standard settings and some natural talent that makes him good at the game.

That being said…

  • Look Sensitivity - 5
  • ADS Sensitivity - 4
  • Response Curve - Classic
